One of the coast guard's new vessels under construction in Halifax will be named in honour of Capt. Nichola Goddard, the first Canadian women killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2006.
On Thursday, Defence Minister Peter MacKay and Fisheries Minister Gail Shea announced in Ottawa that seven new Hero class Canadian Coast Guard vessels would be named in honour of Canadian heroes.
Goddard's father, Tim, the dean of education at UPEI, said it's an honour to have the ship named after his daughter. The Calgary woman was 26 when she was killed while fighting Taliban insurgents.
The ships will also carry the name of another soldier killed in Afghanistan, Cpl. Mark Robert McLaren, two members of the Canadian Coast Guard, a fisheries officer and two RCMP officers.
Last fall, two of the ships were named for First World War winners of the Victoria Cross.
All nine of the 43-metre ships will be in service by 2013.
