Official: Ivory Coast fighting kills at least 10

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast – An official in Ivory Coast says fighting between forces for the country's two political rivals has left at least 10 policemen dead.

The fighting was among the heaviest since the country's disputed presidential election held nearly three months ago.

The death toll could not immediately be confirmed, but a senior adviser to internationally recognized winner Alassane Ouattara said that at least 30 troops were killed. Another employee of the mayor's office of Abobo put the death toll at 40.

The officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo has refused to cede power after the U.N. said he lost November's poll.

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) — An adviser to the man who is internationally recognized as Ivory Coast's president says commandos ambushed and killed forces loyal to the incumbent president.

The adviser to Alassane Ouattara said Wednesday that "invisible commandos" killed troops loyal to incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo on Tuesday. He says the commandos seized at least four military and police vehicles in the pro-Ouattara neighborhood in Abidjan.

The death toll could not be independently confirmed.

The adviser asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The PK-18 neighborhood has been the scene of brutal attacks by security forces loyal to Gbagbo, who refuses to cede power after the U.N. said he lost November's poll.
