Veteran actor James Gammon dead at 70
LOS ANGELES, Veteran stage and film actor James Gammon died at his home near Los Angeles at the age of 70 following a bout with cancer, his family said.
The Los Angeles Times said Sunday that a memorial service would be conducted next month at the MET Theatre in Los Angeles, which Gammon helped found in the 1970s.
Gammon, who died Friday, had his highest-profile film role in "Major League," in which he played baseball manager Lou Brown. He also had roles in "Cold Mountain," "Urban Cowboy" and "Silverado."
His television career stretched from "Gunsmoke" to "The Waltons" and "Grey's Anatomy."
The Times said Gammon shined the most on the stage. He received several Los Angeles Critics Awards for acting and directing. He also appeared in a string of plays by Sam Shepard.
"He did a lot of movies and TV, but I think his great presence and power was on the stage," Paul Koslo, an actor and director who worked with Gammon at the MET, told the Times. "He always had something unexpected, riveting and real."
Gammon is survived by Nancy, his wife of 38 years; two daughters, Allison Mann of Costa Mesa and Amy Gammon of West Hollywood; two grandchildren; a brother and a sister, the Times said.
