PHOENIX - Police say a motorcyclist is dead after a collision involving two men in wheelchairs early Friday morning in Phoenix.

Sgt. Nick Diponzio with the Phoenix Police Department said two men in wheelchairs were going westbound on the side of Indian School Road near 99th Avenue along a dirt embankment.

A 23-year-old man in a motorized wheelchair was towing a 36-year-old man in a manual wheelchair behind him with a tether, Diponzio said.

The 46-year-old motorcyclist on a 2004 Harley Davidson was also going westbound on Indian School Road around 12:15 a.m. when he somehow collided with the wheelchairs, Diponzio said.

The motorcyclist ended up in the middle of the road, he said.

Police initially said the motorcyclist died at the scene but later confirmed with ABC15 that he was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Diponzio said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.

The two men in wheelchairs were taken to a local hospital with scrapes and bruises, he said.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the collision.

Diponzio said it’s unclear if any impairment was a factor in the collision.
