WSVN-TV - Woman dies after plastic surgery
- Family and friends are searching for answers after their loved one died following plastic surgery.
According to 35-year-old Lidvian Zelaya's husband, Osvaldo Vargas, his wife died after she went to a plastic surgery center in Broward County, Monday.
Zelaya's family's attorney, Spencer Aronfeld, held a press conference with the victim's family Thursday afternoon. "People are not supposed to die undergoing plastic surgery, and they're certainly not supposed to die undergoing an elective cosmetic procedure as simple as this," Aronfeld said.
Aronfeld said Zelaya went in for liposuction and another plastic surgery procedure at the cosmetic surgery center, which has not been named, as no lawsuit has been formally filed. The attorney believes something went wrong at the center because Zelaya had to be transported to Florida Medical Center in Lauderdale Lakes. Shortly after arriving to the emergency room, Zelaya was pronounced dead. "Her New Year's resolution was to simply look better," said Aronfeld. "We don't know yet whether it was caused by human error or a complication or by malpractice. We don't know that."
Meanwhile, the victim's family is left to mourn her death. Speaking in Spanish, Vargas said, "She died looking for beauty, but to me, she was already beautiful. She was always happy. She was also smiling. She was always dancing. She was beautiful."
According to Vargas, his wife was never evaluated by an independent, third party doctor before she had the plastic surgery. He believes that if his wife got a second opinion regarding her surgery, she may not have died. Vargas offered a word of warning to anyone who is considering undergoing a plastic surgery procedure. "I recommend to all the people who want to get their surgery, please investigate it first," Vargas said.
Aronfeld is conducting an investigation into Zelaya's death and the cosmetic surgery center. Aronfeld said he will not file a lawsuit against the center until his investigation is complete.
According to an attorney for the plastic surgery center, he cannot not confirm Zelaya was a patient at the center because of privacy laws. In addition, he could not comment on the case because he has no facts on the story as of yet.
