'Willy Wonka' opera debuts this week

ST. LOUIS, (UPI) -- This week marks the premier of a U.S. opera version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" that some leaders in the field see becoming the next "Nutcracker."

The full-length opera "The Golden Ticket" in St. Louis is geared toward families and could become for opera what "Nutcracker" is for ballet, a must-see event for parents.

"The opera world has never had a 'Nutcracker,' something people take their children to because they saw it when they were children," Timothy O'Leary, general director of Opera Theatre of St. Louis, told the Los Angeles Times.

O'Leary said the opera created by Peter Ash and Donald Sturrock has the potential to become a standard for opera companies across the United States. "I's sort of our dream that this will become that for many companies going forward."

"The Golden Ticket" premiers at the Opera Theatre with Canadian bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch singing the role of Willy Wonka.
