The city of Winnipeg is pulling out all the stops to tackle the most recent dump of snow, an estimated 15 centimetres according to reports late Friday afternoon.
"Winnipeg is initiating a major plowing operation," officials announced Friday, reminding residents that parking bans will be in effect for parts of the coming weekend.
The first ban will take effect at midnight on all designated snow routes. It will be lifted at 6 a.m. CT on Saturday.
That will be followed by a residential overnight parking ban Saturday night.
About 350 pieces of equipment are expected to be deployed in the operation, which officials estimated will cost $4.5 million.
"With recent accumulations of snow, we will be grader plowing all Priority-2 and Priority-3 streets which include bus routes, collector streets and residential streets," Ken Boyd, Winnipeg's manager of streets maintenance, said. "We are asking the public to find alternative parking locations while the two parking bans are in effect."
Back lanes will also get attention, starting during the day Saturday and the city promised that work would continue until all back lanes are completed.
Plowing of residential streets was also expected to begin Saturday.
