WORLD CUP: South Korea 2, Greece 0
PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa, (UPI) -- South Korea got goals from Lee Jung-Soo and Park Ji-Sung Saturday and went on to defeat Greece 2-0 in FIFA World Cup Group B play.
Lee opened the scoring in the seventh minute and Park gave South Korea an insurance goal seven minutes into the second half as South Korea made an important stride toward reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 2002 when it co-hosted the cup with Japan.
Lee found the net off a left-corner free kick from Ki Sung-Yeung. Ki's cross deflected off the head of Greece midfielder Konstantinos Katsouranis' head and bounced to close-in defender Lee, who coaxed it inside the right.
South Korea took control when Park, of Manchester United, stole the ball from Loukas Vyntra on the edge of the area and snapped a shot on the right side just over the Greece netminder's outstretched leg.
Greece finally geared up its attack in the last 20 minutes but it was too late. It must now beat Argentina and Nigeria in its next two matches to reach the knockout round.
Group B play resumes Thursday when Argentina plays South Korea and Greece plays Nigeria.
