HOUSTON -- A young mother was killed by a wrong-way driver in northeast Harris County last night. Deputies say a pickup driver smashed into three other vehicles while going the wrong way on FM 2100 near Beckman in Huffman.
Around 9pm, witnesses reported seeing a white pickup truck weaving back and forth heading northbound on FM 2100. Harris County sheriff's deputies say that's when the suspect, Matthew Cone, drove into oncoming traffic, crashed into an SUV and then kept on going. Deputies say just minutes later, he hit another SUV and then crashed head-on into Brittany Mapstone's car, instantly killing the 20-year-old mother.
"After the GMC swerved to the right, she did not have time to react to the vehicle in her lane and was struck head-on with that silver Silverado," Sgt. S. Wolverton with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
The drivers in the other two SUVs involved were taken to the hospital, one with a broken arm and the other with minor injuries. Mapstone killed in the accident was alone in the vehicle.
Cone was injured and taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he is listed serious but stable condition.
Deputies are awaiting drug and alcohol test results. If Cone was intoxicated, he will face intoxication assault charges and intoxication manslaughter for the death of the woman.
