Cruise ship grounded off northern Canada
KUGLUKTUK, Nunavut, -- More than 100 passengers and crew remained stranded Sunday aboard their cruise ship, which ran aground off Canada's far north coast, officials said.
The Canadian coast guard said all 118 passengers plus the crew on the Clipper Adventurer were safe and unharmed, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. The plan was to get the icebreaker Amundsen to the cruise ship by Sunday night and ferry the passengers to Kugluktuk where they would then be flown to Edmonton.
The Clipper Adventurer struck an uncharged rock Friday night in Nunavut's Coronation Gulf in the Beaufort Sea while on a journey from Port Epworth to Kugluktuk, the CBC said.
The crew tried unsuccessfully to free the ship during high tide Saturday.
While cruise line Chief Executive Officer Matthew Swan said the ship was "completely stable," he didn't know how it will be freed.
"There is a list of about 4.5 degrees to the port side, but there doesn't seem to be any damage that we can detect," Swan said.
