STRATFORD, Conn. -- An intruder was killed in an overnight incident at a Stratford home, police said.

Police said officers were called to a home on Seabreeze Drive at about 1:22 a.m after receiving word of a home invasion.

Stratford police said the 71-year-old homeowner told them that the intruder first pounded on the front door of his home and when he wouldn't let him inside, the intruder broke in through a bathroom window off the home's deck.

"We're thankful that he's OK," said the victim's brother, Jim Smith. "He was going to the bathroom and when he was going in, the guy came out of the bathroom."

Police said the man struck the homeowner in the face and he fell down the stairs. That's when he got out of the home and went to a neighbor for help.

Police said the intruder had socks on, but no shoes, and that when he got inside the home, he kept asking the homeowner for a knife. Police said inside the house, utensils, drawers and knives were scattered about.

When police entered the home, they said they found the intruder dead in a bathtub.

The intruder was probably hurt before entering the victim's home, according to police because a trail of blood was found along Seabreeze Drive.

Police are investigating to see if the blood belonged to the man who was dead inside the home.

Police said the man was not carrying identification and they were working to find out who the man is.

The homeowner refused to go to the hospital for treatment.

The incident remains under investigation.
