BRAINTREE, Mass. -- A commuter rail train crashed into a car in Braintree on Monday night.

The accident occurred on the Plymouth branch of the commuter rail. The train slammed into a Toyota Highlander at the Grove Street Crossing at Grove Street and Commerce Drive.

“You can see the car’s all demolished behind the fence there. She was lucky,” said Barbara Archibald, who heard the crash.

MBTA Police believe the driver may have been ejected from the crushed car. Amazingly, police say she not only survived, but she was conscious enough to explain what she did wrong.

“She tried to beat the train,” said MBTA Police Sgt. Giancarlo Cantella.

Police say the crossing gates were down when the driver went around them. The conductor of the train had time to hit the brakes, but it was not enough time to avoid the crash.

“It kind of sickened me a little bit. It’s just not a way to start a holiday season,” said Bob Greene, a witness.

“We always stop for the train. It makes me sick. It could have been anybody I feel like,” said Alice Higgins, a neighbor.

Crews had to wait for the right time to remove the vehicle. The front, the side and the rear were all completely smashed in.

The accident slowed down the evening commute, according to Cantella.

None of the passengers on the involved train were injured.

The driver was taken to South Shore Hospital, and even police were surprised to see someone walk away from the crash.

The driver was listed in serious condition Monday night. According to police, she will likely face charges.
