The identities of two people killed when two aircraft collided in midair will be released Saturday, Virginia authorities said.

A medical helicopter and a privately-owned small plane collided Friday afternoon near the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, police told CNN affiliate WHSV.

Both of the fatalities were in the small plane. The helicopter landed safely with three people -- a pilot and two medical crew members -- onboard, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman told WHSV.

There were no patients and no injuries reported aboard the medical helicopter, which was returning from dropping off a patient, Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Scott Van Lear said.

Authorities had not released the victims' names late Friday.

National Transportation Safety Board officials are assisting the investigation.
