<div>A fire at Sable Fish Packers on Cape Sable Island Thursday has left anywhere from 50 to 80 people out of work for at least a month.

"Sometime yesterday morning, before everyone came to work, it appears we had an electrical fire in our herring processing room. It started from a piece of safety equipment from what we can tell," said Nathan Blades, owner of the plant.

"We suffered extensive damage to the room, probably half of our herring filleting machines are in pretty bad shape, probably destroyed," said Blades.

The torched herring filet line had just started, with only four days of production this season, which lasts until October.

Blades said firefighters were quick to reach the plant and the fire was contained to the one processing room.

"It's a lot of people, it is seasonal employment, but it's important this time of year and a lot of people depend on it, it's not a good thing for the area," said Blades. "As far as a production standpoint, it really couldn't have come at a worse time."

Insurance adjusters were assessing the damage Friday.
