TOKYO, -- One man was arrested and another placed on a nationwide wanted list in the alleged robbery of more than $7 million, officials in Japan said.
The Metropolitan Police Department said it arrested Hideaki Ueki on suspicion of breaking into a security office last month in western Tokyo in the largest cash robbery in the country's history.
The Yomiuri Shimbun reported Thursday police are looking for Yutaka Watanabe as an accomplice in the robbery. Police have charged Ueki with burglary, inflicting injury and unlawful entry into a building; Watanabe faces the same charges.
The MPD alleges the two broke into the Tachikawa office of Nichigetsu Keibi Hosho through an unlocked window after 3 a.m. May 12, slashing a security guard in the chest before binding his wrists with adhesive tape and making off with about 604 million yen.
Surveillance cameras near the crime site filmed two men buying adhesive tape at a convenience store shortly before the robbery.
Police arrested Ueki at his parent's home.
The security firm said it was holding a larger than normal amount of cash before sending it out to area post offices for weekend business.
Police said the robbers made off with about 70 bags filled with cash and the suspects knew details about the office and its contents, leading investigators to wonder if they had an inside accomplice.
