OTTAWA, -- A hacker's claim on the Canadian Conservative party's Web site Prime Minister Stephen Harper had choked on breakfast Tuesday was a hoax, a spokesman said.
The professional-looking news release claimed Harper was eating breakfast with his wife Laureen and their children when the prime minister choked on a hash brown potato. It said his wife called 911, a staff member was able to clear his blocked airway and that he was airlifted to a Toronto hospital.
While the allegation caused a stir in the capital, Harper's director of communications, Dimitri Soudas told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. it was a hoax.
"Clearly somebody hacked our Web site," Soudas said. "The prime minister actually took his daughter to school this morning."
Further muddying the confusion was a Twitter posting by a new Conservative member of Parliament that suggested Harper had choked.
MP Chris Alexander soon after posted a correction and said "apologies to all," the Globe and Mail reported.
By midday, no one had claimed responsibility for posting the fake news release.
