D/FW AIRPORT — Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is about to undergo a huge makeover — from the ground up.
The project to restore the sprawling facility, which opened in 1973, is targeting everything from the terminals to the entrance and exit booths.
D/FW is the world third-busiest airport, but it's also beginning to show its age.
Airport CEO Jeff Fagen told members of the Tarrant Regional Transportation Coalition Wednesday that the original airport terminals are now 36 years old. They will be the first target of the $1.75 billion restoration program that begins next spring at Terminal A.
The goal is to make all of the D/FW terminals as modern as the new international Terminal D.
Self-service ticketing will be expanded and so will capacity at security checkpoints to incorporate new TSA requirements.
Inside the terminals, concessions will be expanded and enhanced for travelers.
Fegan said he is also excited about the completion of DART's Orange Line, now on track to arrive at D/FW Airport in 2014. He said the light rail link will also transform the look and feel of the airport when travelers can go directly to their terminals.
