Ottawa police have identified two additional cellblock incidents that need investigating on top of the four already being probed, two by the Ontario Provincial Police and two by the Special Investigations Unit, after video surfaced showing rough treatment of detained individuals.
"The OPP is investigating a total of four police cellblock incidents," the police said in a news release Friday.
Added to the two being investigated by the SIU, that makes a total of six incidents under investigation.
Police have been responding to a public outcry ever since November when a cellblock surveillance video was made public that showed Ottawa woman Stacy Bonds being subdued by police officers.
It showed officers pinning down, kneeing and strip-searching Bonds, who was being detained for alleged public intoxication, a charge that was later dismissed.
Public reaction to the video prompted a review of police policies, and it was during the review that more incidents were uncovered, police said.
Meanwhile, Bonds has launched a $1.2-million lawsuit against the Ottawa Police Service, Chief Vern White and several court officers.
At the end of November, a second video was released showing a homeless man, Terry Delay, being dragged to his cell by several police officers, then apparently being kicked by Special Const. Melanie Morris, who was also involved in the incident with Stacy Bonds.
The Bonds and Delay cases are being investigated by the Ontario SIU.
No video has been made public in the four cases being probed by the OPP.
