28 die in China coal mine
XI'AN, China, The owner of a northwestern China coal mine where 28 miners died in an accident was taken into custody Sunday, police said.
The miners were working in a shaft at Xiaonangou coal mine in Shaanxi province when the accident occurred Saturday night, Xinhua reported.
The state-run news agency said the provincial government issued a statement saying the accident was caused by an underground cable catching fire about 8:20 p.m.
Rescue crews had retrieved the remains of five of the miners by 6:30 a.m. Sunday and were trying to reach the others, Xinhua said.
