Five inmates have been charged in the slaying of another inmate at the maximum security Edmonton Institution earlier this year.

Gyozo Victor Barasso, 45, was found stabbed to death in his cell on Feb. 26.

Two inmates are charged with first-degree murder; another three inmates face charges of being accessories to murder after the fact and obstruction of justice..

An autopsy determined Barasso died from multiple stab wounds.

Barasso was serving four years and two months on convictions of robbery, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

According to parole documents, Barasso was released to a halfway house last summer and left without permission after one week.

He was arrested and charged 10 days later in connection with robberies at three pharmacies, prompting police to call him the "drug store bandit."

The documents stated Barasso had a history of becoming violent with corrections officers and other offenders when he didn't get his way or thought he had been slighted.
