ALGIERS (AFP) – Algerian coastguards said they intercepted 11 migrants on Sunday, including a child and a disabled man, in a boat off the coast of the north African country.

The migrants, all aged under 30, were stopped around four nautical miles from the northwestern city of Oran, the coastguard said.

They were aboard a rubber dinghy trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Oran, which is around 430 kilometres (265 miles) west of Algiers.

Many migrants, both Algerians and people from sub-Saharan Africa, set off from the region in the hope of reaching Europe.
