Sections of an apartment building in Ottawa's south end were evacuated Wednesday night after a water pipe valve burst, flooding an area of the highrise.
Firefighters were called to The Faircrest apartment building on Riverside Drive, near Smyth Road, around 7 p.m., and were forced to evacuate the building shortly after.
The broken valve — which was connected to the building's sprinkler system — flooded the 12th floor, and water leaked down the centre of the building through elevators and a stairwell.
One resident told CBC News she saw water begin to leak through an overhead light socket in her apartment.
There are ongoing concerns about water affecting the building's elevators, stairwell, and electrical system.
Not all residents were forced to evacuate the building, but those who were stayed warm in three OC Transpo buses called to the scene.
It's not yet known whether those evacuated will be allowed to return to the building Wednesday night. Red Cross officials on the scene said some may have to spend the night in hotels.
