A 26-year-old man has been charged with numerous offences after allegedly going on a rampage with an axe in Winnipeg.

It started at about 2 p.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of Sargent Avenue, where the man allegedly smashed windows and caused a disturbance before fleeing in a pickup truck.

He then went to a convenience store in the 600 block of Ellice Avenue and confronted a 56-year-old female clerk, slamming the axe onto the front counter and demanding cash and merchandise, police said.

The man was unsuccessful and fled the store, going up to a parked vehicle nearby and striking its windows several times and causing significant damage, police said.

The man then drove off in his pickup truck, eventually crashing into a car on Arlington Street near Logan Avenue.

He then fled the scene in the truck but was spotted by police in the area of the Arlington Street bridge.

He was stopped and arrested without incident at that time, police said.

The man has been charged with possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose, robbery, mischief, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
