Bedard begins final rehab step

SEATTLE -- Erik Bedard allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings in an Arizona League game, a final step before making his season debut for the Seattle Mariners next month.

The veteran left-hander allowed four hits, struck out three and did not walk anyone Monday night as the starting pitcher for the Mariners' rookie league team in a game played in Surprise, Ariz.

The 31-year-old, who hadn't pitched since shoulder surgery in August, faced 12 batters, threw 52 pitches and got five groundouts.

Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said Bedard is scheduled to pitch Saturday for the Peoria team in the Arizona Rookie League.

Wakamatsu said Bedard will probably need at least one more start in the higher minors before joining the Mariners.
