Beltre declines option on Red Sox contract

BOSTON, -- Boston Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre has declined a $10 million option and will instead test the free-agent market, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.
Citing an unnamed Major League Baseball source, the newspaper said Beltre has officially informed the Red Sox he won't exercise his 2011 contract option after posting some remarkable numbers last season.
The move was anticipated after Beltre batted .321, clubbed 28 homers and drove in 102 runs for the Sox, as well as turning in an excellent fielding year at third.
The newspaper noted Boston General Manager Theo Epstein has said he'd like to re-sign Beltre but will have to keep an eye on costs.
The Bosox have an exclusive negotiating window for Beltre until 12:01 a.m. Sunday, but they are unlikely to sign him until he hears offers from other clubs.
