Border agent admits assaulting suspect

TUCSON, (UPI) -- U.S. Border Patrol Agent Eduardo Moreno pleaded guilty in Arizona Thursday to beating a Mexican national in his custody.

Moreno admitted in U.S. District Court in Tucson that he kicked the man, struck him in the stomach with a baton, threw him to the ground and punched him. The unwarranted assault occurred May 10, 2010, while Moreno was escorting the victim to a processing center in Nogales, Ariz.

Moreno is to be sentenced Aug. 12. He faces as much as 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

"We place a great deal of trust in federal law enforcement officers, and the Civil Rights Division will aggressively prosecute any officer who violates the rights of others and abuses the power they are given to perform their critical duties," Thomas E. Perez, an assistant U.S. attorney general, said in a statement.
