Boy, 4, dies in clothes dryer
ASHBOURNE, England, Police in Britain said a 4-year-old boy died after spending more than an hour in a tumble dryer while playing hide and seek.
Investigators in Ashbourne, England, said mother Anne Shepherd went shopping shortly after 10 a.m. Monday and left 4-year-old Sonny in the care of older siblings Sarah, 20, Nathan, 19, Martin, 17, and Luke, 15, The Sun reported Monday.
However, the boy apparently embarked on a game of hide and seek while the older siblings slept in another room and managed to close himself in the dryer. Neighbors said the boy liked to hide and surprise his family.
Shepherd called police when she arrived home at about 10:30 a.m. and discovered Sonny was missing. Police said they searched the area with helicopters, which used loudspeakers to inform the public below of the missing child.
However, police said they discovered the boy in the dryer after less than an hour of searching. He was declared dead at the scene.
Investigators said it was not clear Sunday whether the dryer was in the cycle while the boy was inside or if he died from running out of oxygen. An investigation was under way.
