A seven-year-old boy died Tuesday night after being pulled from Lake Ontario at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.
Niagara Regional Police said the boy was pronounced dead at a St. Catharines hospital shortly before 9 p.m.
The boy had been playing with friends in Ryerson Park when they noticed he was missing, police said.
His friends contacted an adult who contacted police around 5:25 p.m. The U.S. Coast Guard and local firefighters assisted in the search.
The boy was discovered in the frigid water near the shore about an hour and a half later by a St. Catharines fire boat and taken to hospital. A police spokesman said doctors worked for a couple of hours to try to save the boy.
