Chevron makes new gas find in Australia
SAN RAMON, Calif., (UPI) -- A deep-water natural gas discovery off the coast of Australia could position the region as a major energy hub, U.S. supermajor Chevron announced.
Chevron Corp. announced the discovery of gas at its operations in the Carnarvon Basin off the coast of Western Australia.
Chevron Vice Chairman George Kirkland said his company was investing heavily in Australian energy sector because of the significant growth potential.
"Our continued success underscores the quality of our Australian portfolio and our technical competence," he added in a statement.
The discovery, Clio-3, is about 90 miles off the coast of Western Australia in more than 3,000 feet of water.
The well was drilled to a depth of 14,137 feet and uncovered a gas pay that was 260 feet thick. Clio-3 is the third discovery in the area.
Chevron said in a statement that explorations in Western Australia are part of a long-term plan to develop natural gas and liquefied natural gas for the Asia-Pacific region.
The company said more tests were needed at Clio-3 to verify the commercial viability of the discovery.
