Chicago police officer shot to death
CHICAGO, A Chicago police officer nearing retirement was shot to death Sunday by someone trying to rob him or steal his new car, authorities said.

Officer Michael Bailey, 62, is the third Chicago officer killed in two months, the Chicago Tribune reported. The married father of three was just weeks from retirement, the newspaper said.

Bailey was shot in front of his home about 6 a.m. after finishing an overnight shift guarding Mayor Richard Daley's house. He was wearing his uniform and identified himself as an officer before exchanging gunfire with at least one person, a source told the Tribune.

Three guns were found at the scene, including Bailey's, police said. No arrests had been made and police were looking for an older-model tan Ford pickup truck that may have bullet holes on the driver side.

Officer Thor Soderberg was in uniform leaving a police facility in the Englewood neighborhood July 7 when he was fatally shot while struggling with a man who took his gun. Officer Thomas Wortham IV was fatally shot outside his parents' home in Chatham May 19.
