- A crematorium caught fire in Meriden on Wednesday morning.

Officials from the Meriden Fire Department said the flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the crematorium on Old Colony Road.

Mike Kroll was inside the crematorium at Walnut Hill Cemetery running two retorts, or ovens when the fire broke out.

"The next thing I know, the alarms went off. I went running round and the whole back of the building was engulfed in flames," he said.

Fire officials said at first they thought the 911 calls reporting the fire were false alarms. Officials said 911 calls are made a lot because people mistake smoke from the chimney as a fire.

"It was unexpected this morning that, when we got a call for that, we thought it was just the routine smoke scares that we have," said Meriden Fire Chief James Trainor.

The fire marshal said the fire was being investigated but looked like the cause was accidental.
