A large fire tore through a townhouse complex in Ottawa's east end early Sunday morning, causing nearly $1 million in damage and displacing eight people from their homes.

The blaze began before midnight at 6822 Jeanne D'Arc Blvd. N. in Orléans, Ottawa Fire Services said in a statement, and drew 60 firefighters and 24 trucks from three stations.

The flames and smoke crept up inside the building's walls, requiring fire crews to tear some of them down.

Eight of the 12 units in the complex were rendered uninhabitable for at least the night, and three of them saw considerable devastation, the fire department said.

Total damages were estimated at $900,000.

The fire was under control by 1:15 a.m., the fire department said.

It said the Salvation Army and Red Cross were called to help the eight people who couldn't go back to their units.

Initial investigation suggests the fire started in or near a chimney.
