Cubs P Zambrano headed for restricted list
CHICAGO, (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano is headed for the restricted list and will begin a treatment program following his dugout meltdown, the team said Monday.

The pitcher has been suspended without pay since the Friday incident, in which he raged through the dugout, accusing teammates of not making plays after the Cubs surrendered an early 4-0 lead to the Chicago White Sox.

Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry said Zambrano -- who has a record of 3-6 and an ERA of 5.66 -- will go the restricted list Tuesday and undergo a treatment program in New York, to be conducted by doctors selected by Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association, after which he will be re-evaluated, MLB.com reported.

"If the program is acted upon properly and in accordance with what the doctors signify he needs to work on and improve on, Carlos would not be reinstated until sometime after the All-Star break," Hendry said.

"It's an unfortunate situation," the Cubs' GM said. "His actions certainly were inappropriate. As I said Friday, those actions toward his teammates and staff will not be tolerated."
