DISH Eyes Impact of Telecom Issues at FCC
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next week, the Federal Communications Commission will tackle an issue not typically found on the satellite industry's regulatory radar - federal intercarrier compensation reform. Yet the push targeting telecom companies has one small dish service worried about its implications.
DISH Network sent a letter to the FCC earlier this week listing its concerns about the agency's continuing effort on intercarrier compensation. The company said it's concerned that any changes "could have the unintended consequence of driving up the cost of the satellite/telco triple play."
DISH services are bundled with other communications offerings sold by mid-sized telephony companies. Those triple-play offers, DISH said, "provide tremendous value, particularly to consumers in rural America."
In its letter to the FCC, DISH asked that interested parties get an opportunity to review and provide comment on details of any comprehensive intercarrier compensation plan.
The meeting set for Nov. 4 has other thorny issues on the agenda, including a move to open up unused broadcast spectrum, so-called white spaces, to wireless broadband access.
