Eye-rolling woman kicked out of meeting

ELMHURST, Ill., A City Council committee meeting in suburban Chicago ended abruptly when two aldermen walked out in protest of a citizen being ejected for rolling her eyes.

Stephen Hipskind, chairman of the Elmhurst City Council committee charged with discussing plans to spend $30,000 to hire a state lobbyist, ordered resident Darlene Heslop to leave the building when she sighed and rolled her eyes during the June 14 meeting, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.

"Making faces behind the mayor's back is disruptive, in my opinion," Hipskind said.

However, two aldermen who disagreed with Hipskind's decision walked out of the meeting, bringing it to an abrupt end.

Officials said the city attorney has now been ordered to research the legal definitions of disorderly conduct and disruptive behavior to allow the council to draft an ordinance surrounding non-verbal disruptions during meetings.
