In a rare attack against factory workers, gunmen in Mexico shot three trucks carrying a company's workers, killing five and injuring 14 others, the state-run Notimex news agency reported, citing local police.

The attack happened Thursday in the border town of Caseta, near violent Ciudad Juarez and across the border from Fabens, Texas.

All of the victims worked for a "maquiladora," a foreign factory that specializes in making parts for goods that are typically exported elsewhere.

A late shift had just ended, and the trucks were transporting employees to their homes, one of the benefits of working at the factory, Notimex reported. They were intercepted by three trucks, from where five men exited and opened fire without saying a word, police said, according to the news agency.

The victims were identified as four women and one man.

Violence is rife in the area, as the Juarez and Sinaloa cartels battle for control of lucrative smuggling routes into the United States, where demand for illegal drugs is strong.

However, it is rare that factory workers be targeted in such a way.
