GLOUCESTER, Mass. -- A family in Gloucester is looking for answers into the disappearance of a 37-year-old man.
Dozens of volunteers searched Stage Fort Park in Gloucester Sunday for Jose “Joe” Odum, who was last seen more than three weeks ago.
"We're just hoping and praying that he is alive but he just needs help from us,” said Odum’s sister, Penny Sperry.
According to his family, Odum has a history of depression. His sisters are worried he may be a threat to himself and to others.
“We don’t know what we’re going to find. We just need peace of mind,” said Sperry. “We need closure. We need something. We need hope that, you know, he’s still out there.”
The search for Odum has pulled help from Gloucester police, harbormasters and the Coast Guard. Family and friends have been searching the city, shoreline and the woods in search of Odum.
Odum’s family last heard from him around 2 a.m. on Nov. 14. He told them he was going into the ocean and not coming back.
“He just, he was distraught. He wasn’t himself. He was depressed,” said Johanna Fulford, Odum’s sister.
“We need hope that we can help him. He would do it for us in a heartbeat,” said Sperry.
Sunday's search ended without success; not a single clue was located.
"We miss him. Please call one of his sisters, come home for Christmas, anything,” Sperry said.
Odum is the father of a 2-year-old daughter.
Odum’s family said he had been prescribed medication for his depression, but he recently stopped taking it.
