HOUSTON -- A blind man was killed and a baby was injured when they were hit by a car as the man and his pregnant wife waited at a bus stop with their baby in a stroller, police said.
Houston police said an officer was flagged down in the area of West Little York Road near T.C. Jester at about 9 a.m. because of an erratic driver.
The officer said he tracked down the car in the 3100 block of West Little York, where he saw the driver hit Theodore Jones, who was with a baby in a stroller. His pregnant wife was a few feet away.
Jones, 31, was thrown several feet and died at the scene, police said.
Friends said Jones was a father of three and was heading home with his 7-month-old son, Seth, after taking two of his children to school.
The baby was taken to Texas Children's Hospital with a broken arm, detectives said. He was listed in good condition.
The officer said the driver, Brenda Gail Johnson, did not stop, and refused when he tried to stop her. She continued down West Little York Road and rear-ended another car, police said.
Johnson's car flipped over. The 50-year-old woman was taken to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital in stable condition. She was later released and taken to jail, officers said.
Police said an investigation determined Johnson was intoxicated, possibly on prescription drugs. Johnson faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter.
Police are investigating to determine how fast she was traveling. The speed limit is 35 mph.
Jones' family said they are heartbroken over their loss.
"He was a great father. He was a good person -- a good person, period, and we're going to miss him," said Jeanette Williams, Jones' godmother. "He was a special person -- very, very special."
Jones' mother said he was born blind, but had an incredible gift.
"He was a musician. At 7 years old, he started playing the keyboard, the organ. He loved God," said Eleanor Jones.
