, Fla., (UPI) -- Florida has ordered the U.S. Navy Veterans Association to stop fundraising in the state.
Investigators for the state say the group appears to operate out of mail boxes rented from commercial companies with officers who do not live at their listed addresses, The St. Petersburg Times reported. The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, headed by Commissioner Charles Bronson, has filed a complaint demanding the surrender of the association's fundraising license.
The group claims it rents an office suite in Tampa, Fla., as a state headquarters. Investigators say the suite is actually a mailbox at a UPS store.
"We believe this group ought to be stripped of their license to operate,'' Terence McElroy, a Bronson spokesman, said. "Our investigation is ongoing, but our first step is to put these people out of the fundraising business."
The group got tax-exempt status in 2002 and claims to have 67,000 members across the country.
