Former defense lobbyist arrested, charged

WASHINGTON, The founder of a lobbying firm has been charged with making illegal campaign contributions and making false statements to a federal agency, U.S. officials said.

Paul Magliocchetti, the founder and president of PMA Group Inc., a now-defunct defense lobbying firm in Arlington, Va., was arrested Thursday by federal agents, a Justice Department release said.

He is charged with making hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal campaign contributions to boost the firm's influence, power and prestige and enrich himself and the firm, the department release said.

"Political contributions to campaign committees and political action committees of various candidates for federal office were a key part of Magliocchetti's plan to increase PMA's profile and its profitability," the indictment said.

For nearly five years, from 2003 to 2008, the 18-page indictment says, Magliocchetti concealed campaign contributions from the Federal Election Commission.

The campaigns receiving the funds were unaware of Magliocchetti's alleged scheme, the department said.

PMA shut down last year several months after the FBI raided its offices as part of an investigation into the firm's Capitol Hill ties.
