A man working at a gas station in Mississauga suffered life-threatening injuries after chasing a driver who allegedly stole gas.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. Thursday at a Petro Canada station on Southdown Road near the Queen Elizabeth Way. Emergency crews arrived to find the man lying on the roadway.

He was first taken to a local hospital, then transferred to a Toronto trauma centre. He is in critical condition.

Police said the employee, believed to be in his 60s, tried to confront the driver and was then hit by the thief's vehicle as he fled the scene.

Police are looking for a gold sedan, and the driver is described as a black male aged 20-30 years. The vehicle may have incurred some damage, and police are urging the public to contact them if they have information.

Peel Regional Police Const. George Tudos said he wouldn't recommend people chase after people breaking the law, "but if you get a marker or licence plate, I mean that will help us in our investigation.

"It is dangerous. You don't know who you are up against."
