Gates proposes rearranging $15B

ABILENE, Kan., (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Saturday he wants to take $15 billion from the Pentagon's bureaucracy and and use it for other purposes.

Speaking to an audience at the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kan., Gates said without the shuffle, the Pentagon would not be able to maintain its current armed forces, The Washington Post reported.

The Post said the proposed savings would be applied to weapons modernization and the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Gates suggested there may be further cuts to major weapons programs.

Gates said the recessed national economy and rising national debt will impose new cuts on the Pentagon, whose budget has almost doubled in the last decade to $550 billion.

The Post said the Bush and Clinton administrations tried to impose similar cuts but were unsuccessful.
