Giants outfielder's brother held in DUI
DANVILLE, Calif., The brother of San Francisco Giants outfielder Nate Schierholtz allegedly drove his pickup truck
on a mile-long series of collisions while drunk, police say.
Walnut Creek, Calif., Police Sgt. Phillip Wisotsky said just after 10 a.m. PDT Sunday, Cainan Schierholtz, 23, of San Ramon was driving a red Dodge pickup when he allegedly veered into a bicycle lane on Danville Boulevard, hitting and hurting a bicyclist and crushing his bicycle, the Contra Costa (Calif.) Times reported.
Schierholtz kept going, hitting a pedestrian standing in the bike lane before swerving back into traffic and colliding with another pickup, police allege.
Still moving, he turned onto Railroad Avenue -- up on the sidewalk this time -- where he knocked a utility pole to the ground before continuing to Linda Mesa Avenue for a Lexus sport utility vehicle-smashing finale, police said.
Schierholtz allegedly tried to drive further down the road but was blocked by neighborhood residents, the Times said. None of the four victims, whose names were not released, faced life-threatening injuries. The bicyclist suffered contusions, head abrasions and minor lacerations. The pedestrian and two occupants of the Lexus sought their own medical treatment.
Police arrested Schierholtz on suspicion of four counts of DUI causing bodily injury, three counts of hit-and-run causing injury, two counts of hit-and-run causing property damage and driving without a license.
California Department of Motor Vehicles records show Schierholtz had a DUI conviction in 2004 as a 17-year-old in Contra Costa County, and he was involved in a crash in January 2009, the Times said.
His driver's license expired this June.
Schierholtz was held Monday on $350,000 bail.
