Google, Liberty Back Satellite Broadband Effort

A company building satellite infrastructure that will deliver broadband communications to emerging markets has won the backing of key multiplatform investors from around the world.

O3b Networks is developing a satellite-based global communications platform that will provide high-speed, low-cost internet connectivity to emerging markets in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. The entity so far has won financial and operational support from Google, Liberty Global and HSBC Principal Investments.

O3b (the acronym stands for "the other 3 billion," referring to the developing world population without broadband access) said it has started the operational and technical development of its service. Production of an initial constellation of 16 satellites also has started, the company said.

The system's 2,300 transponder equivalents will deliver low-latency internet backhaul at speeds reaching 10 gigabits per second. And the scalable nature of the system allows for additional satellites to increase capacity and meet growing demand, the company said.

Service activation is scheduled for late 2010, O3b added.
