Grenade kills Serb protester in Kosovo

MITROVICA, Kosovo, (UPI) -- At least one man was killed and 10 people were injured Friday when someone threw a grenade into a Serb demonstration in a city in northern Kosovo.

The demonstration was held to protest the opening of a government office in the Serbian part of Mitrovica, the Financial Times reported. The Serbian National Security Council blamed Peter Feith, the European Union envoy to Kosovo for the "tragic events," saying he had moved from neutrality to promoting integration of northern Kosovo into the rest of the country.

The dead man was identified as Dr. Mesud Dzekovic. Another demonstration was held in the main square to honor the pediatrician's memory.

Bajram Rexhepi, the Kosovar interior minister, said the protesters were armed and suggested they were responsible for the explosion. He said the government office would not be closed or moved.

Mitrovica is divided by the Ibar River, which separates the largely Albanian part of Kosovo from the ethnically Serb area to the north. There has been frequent violence in the city since Kosovo declared independence in 2008.
