Gutierrez Urges Viewers to Get DTV Coupons

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday marked the three-month point in which the nation will make the switch to digital TV.

And U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez used the occasion to remind consumers about the coming switch and encourage them to take advantage of the government's digital TV converter box coupon program. The program provides $40 coupons that can be applied to devices that convert digital signals into analog for old sets.

"We are very pleased with the high level of consumer participation in the TV converter box coupon program, but there are still many who need to take action in order to be prepared for the transition," Gutierrez said. He urged off-air viewers without a box to apply for a converter box coupon, which is offered through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

In three months "all households using antennas with analog TVs will be impacted by the switch to digital broadcast. This upcoming switch requires immediate attention by those households. If they don't act soon, they will find themselves without access to television," Gutierrez said.
