Heat health alert declared in Britain
LONDON, (UPI) -- British government weather forecasters issued a health alert Friday, anticipating a heat wave expected to bring 90 degree temperatures.
The Meteorological Office said the mercury was expected to hit 90 on Saturday in southern England, falling to 82 on Sunday, The Daily Telegraph reported. The forecasters predicted little relief at night, with temperatures remaining in the high 60s.
These temperatures might seem mild in the tropics or in the summer in regions with a continental weather pattern, they are high in England, where summers are usually cool.
"While there is the possibility of daytime temperatures reaching trigger thresholds, it is the night time values which are of real concern," said Wayne Elliott, head of Meteorological Office health forecasting. "High humidity and the lack of any breeze could make matters worse for people with underlying health problems.
Residents were warned to pay special attention to those most vulnerable to the heat, including people with existing medical problems, the elderly and babies and young children.
Northern England and Scotland were expected to get some much-needed rain.
