Hradecka upset worth semifinals berth
PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Lucie Hradecka pulled off an upset Friday in quarterfinal play of the Prague Open tennis tournament in the Czech Republic.
Hradecka had six service breaks -- three in each set -- in a 6-4, 7-5 victory over fifth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues. Hradecka won despite landing just 38 percent of her first serves, compared to 62 percent for Medina Garrigues. But she took more than half the points when Medina Garrigues served.
Seventh-seeded Agnes Szavay needed only 70 minutes to dispatch Polona Hercog 6-1, 6-4, saving both break-point situations she faced and converting six of the 15 she forced on Hercog.
No. 8-seeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova was pushed in a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win over Johanna Larsson and Patty Schnyder also used a late break in rallying for a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Anna Tatishvili in Friday's other matches.
Hradecka will go against Szavay in semifinals, while Strycova and Schnyder will square off in the other match Saturday. The semifinals winners advance to the Sunday title match with a first-place check for $37,000 at stake.
