Intelsat Orders New Satellite

Orbital Sciences said it was selected by Intelsat to design, build and deliver a new satellite, the Intelsat 18.

The satellite will be based on Orbital's STAR-2 platform. It will carry 24 C-Band transponders that will cover the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and 12 Ku-Band transponders that will provide service to the United States, French Polynesia, Australia, New Caledonia and other Pacific Islands.

The satellite will be located at 180 degrees East longitude. The IS-18 bird will replace Intelsat's IS-701 spacecraft.

This deal for Orbital is the 24th satellite ordered by customers throughout the world and will be the eighth in the Intelsat fleet. The Intelsat 18 spacecraft is the third order to be placed in 2008 for satellites based on the STAR-2 platform.
