The final box office numbers from foreign theaters are in and while domestic business was down last year, the international movie marketplace continued its pattern of persistent growth, collecting $17.6 billion in revenue for 2010, nearly two billion more than in 2009.
Overseas box office accounted for 62 percent of the worldwide 2010 total of $28.2 billion, according to the global media measurement company Rentrak Corp., demonstrating the vitality, relevance and essential nature of the international marketplace.
Of course, it's the movies themselves that drive audiences into theaters around the world and no film did that more effectively than "Avatar." The film accounted for 7.4 percent of the international marketplace and in the process, became the highest grossing movie of all-time.
Disney's "Alice In Wonderland" and "Toy Story 3" round out the international top 3, generating a combined 7.24 percent of the international take and illustrating, along with "Avatar," the strong global appetite for 3-D films.
The top ten films released in 2010 in North America were also favorites with audiences abroad: On a film-by-film basis, 66 percent on average of their total worldwide gross was derived from the international arena, with notably half of these films being part of established franchises.
The year-end statistics clearly illustrate the international theatrical marketplace is the key to the success of the worldwide movie economy and is showing no signs of slowing down in the coming decade.
